- First, remove the smoke detector from the ceiling or wall.
- Check the back of the device for the date of manufacture.
- Keep in mind that smoke detectors should be replaced 10 years from the date of manufacture on the back of the device.
- If the date is less than 10 years old, put the smoke detector back in its place.
FEMA also suggests that you test the batteries on all your smoke detectors once a month.
To do so, push the test button and make sure your alarms go off when tested.
If no sound is made, it needs to be replaced.
